Phillip Medhurst

Devout Men Taking the Body of Saint Stephen. 1776. Oil on canvas. Height x width (including semi-circle): 224 7/16 x 125 9/16 ins (570 x 319 cms). It was commissioned in 1776 by the Rector of St. Stephen Walbrook, London, for installation over the altar on the east wall. In 2013 it went from the church to a private American collection, and in 2015 the painting was gifted anonymously to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts.
